August 3: Edenderry

Edenderry looked charming, and although not much was open, we decided to stick around for an extra day and night.

Panorama of Edenderry Harbour

While walking the dogs on the first evening, I saw someone working on one of the other boats along the canal just outside the harbour. I called out, and he came ashore to chat. Sean turned out to be a really friendly and knowledgeable boatman. He had his own barge there, and was working on several boats for other people. He gave me lots of information about the canal, including history as well as practical advice. I owe him a pint when our paths cross again.

The next day I ran lots of errands, including riding to the other side of town to do our laundry at a local petrol station (many gas stations here have a laundry station in their parking lot, which is very convenient for those on the move). On my way through town, a scooter rally came through town. I was too slow to grab a picture, but there must have been close to 100 scooters. The Irish version of Sturgis.

Sarah discovered a Polish grocery store just by the harbor. She brought home a huge package of pirogi which she proceeded to fry up in a pan with butter and onions. Yum!

On one of my trips out, I found a father and son just outside the boat. He wanted to talk boats, having just purchased a steel boat himself. They had just taken her out for the first time. Again we were given lots of tips about places to stop along the Shannon. We feel well looked-after.
